John is the Deputy Chief Executive/Head of Operations and is also the company’s spokesperson on pensions. He campaigns vigorously on behalf of B& CE for the government to remove the unnecessary barriers that act as disincentives for lower to moderate earners to save for retirement.

John has worked in the financial services industry over 30 years and has held a number of senior positions in the UK and overseas. He has been married to Jacqui for over 30 years and they have 3 daughters and 2 grandsons and he enjoys travelling, football, rugby and spending time with his family.

John is a Principal within Mercer’s Financial Strategy Group. In this role, he supports consultants in advising companies on the management of pension risks and costs. John is also a director of Foresight Trustees Limited. Prior to joining Mercer in 2006, John was the Head of Finance and Risk at Invensys plc. He has also held the role of Group Treasurer at LucasVarity plc, TI Group plc, the Vestey Group and, on an acting basis, of various other companies.

He has an MA in Natural Sciences from the University of Oxford (St Edmund Hall), an MBA from Bradford University and an MSc in Risk Management & Insurance from the City University Cass Business School.

John is a Fellow of the Association of Corporate Treasurers, a former member of the ACT’s examination board, the author of its training material for the Certificate in Pensions Risk Management and the Chairman of the Treasurer’s 2005 Annual Conference. He is a regular writer of articles on pensions and other subjects for The Treasurer and other publications.

Sir James HodgeSir James Hodge

Sir James is a former British diplomat. His 37-year Foreign Office career concentrated on trade and economic issues. Much of his time overseas was spent in East Asia. As well as postings to Tokyo and Beijing, he served as Ambassador to Thailand and to Laos, and as Consul-General at Hong Kong and Macao.

Married, with three grown-up daughters, Sir James lives in London. A member of the Central Council of the Royal Over-Seas League and a Deputy Chairman of Asia House, he is also an Advisor to the Mansion House Scholarship Scheme.

Duncan HoworthDuncan Howorth

Jardine Lloyd Thompson

Duncan is Managing Director of JLT Employee Benefits division having joined JLT Group in 2000. The division spans pensions, actuarial and investment consulting through pensions administration services and software development. Benefit Consulting and SIPP administration services are also provided.

Prior to joining Jardine Lloyd Thompson, Duncan was Managing Director of Abbey National Benefit Consultants Limited and was responsible for founding the company in 1988. He was also responsible as Chairman for developing James Hay into its strong market position in SIPPs.

Duncan's hobbies include golf and cricket, both of which he continues to play as well as coaching cricket at colts level.

Anthony Filbin joined Legal & General in 1979 and has held a number of senior positions within the pensions division, including Pensions Director with responsibility for Legal & General's suite of retail pension and annuity products.

Tony was responsible for the development of Legal & General's Group SIPP proposition, delivered by the specialist business division, Corporate Wealth.

Tony is a regular speaker at pension conferences and has held committee positions with the Institute of Actuaries and the Pensions Management Institute.

Donald FlemingDonald Fleming

Donald Fleming helped to establish Gazelle’s pensions advisory team in 2005, bringing 11 years’ investment banking experience with JP Morgan Cazenove, where he advised some of the UK’s largest companies and investment funds on capital management and M&A activity. Prior to this he was with Clifford Chance where he practised as a banking and capital markets lawyer with a focus on securitisation and structured finance.

Simon GaddSimon Gadd

Simon Gadd is the Managing Director for the Annuity business of Legal & General. Simon has worked for Legal & General for 20 years. In this time he has performed many varied roles, including periods at the helm of Legal & General’s Retail Protection and Group Risk business.

In his role, Simon manages all aspects of Legal & General’s involvement in both the individual and bulk annuity markets.

Simon is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries.

Colin has over 20 years experience in the Pensions Industry, having performed a variety of roles in operations management and latterly in business development management.

Colin is Commercial Director for Pensions Administration at Aon Consulting. He is a member of the Administration Executive Board and also the Aon Consulting UK Commercial Board. As well as being responsible for business growth within Pensions Administration and promoting the Aon Consulting brand, he is heavily involved in shaping Aon’s administration proposition both to existing and potential clients – a principal focus of which is on service delivery and the qualitative measures that can be incorporated within the overall reporting structure.

John Harrison is Head of UK Institutional Advisory Solution within the Global Investment Solutions team. He is responsible for developing our advisory services for UK clients. Since 2005 John has also been UK Chief Investment Officer with overall responsibility for the investment of all UK clients’ portfolios.

John has 27 years investment industry experience, including 22 years at UBS Global Asset Management.

As a Partner in the Pensions Group, Shona's responsibilities include investment governance matters, including the Horwath Clark Whitehill Investment Governance Survey. Shona is Secretary to the Pensions Research Accountants’ Group SORP and Derivative working parties. She is also a member of the ICAEW Pensions Technical Discussion Group.

Philip is Head of Corporate SIPP sales at Pointon York SIPP Solutions, responsible for developing their innovative retirement planning solutions to help organisations gain competitive advantage in workplace pensions.

Philip has over 20 years’ experience in general management roles, 13 of which were spent in HR and change management consultancies, specialising in reward, benefits strategy and flexible benefits.

He is the author of Tolley's “Flexible Benefits - Practical Guide” and the CIPD “Executive Guide to Flexible Benefits”.

Graeme JohnstonGraeme Johnston

Graeme has over 20 years of experience in fund management, covering at various times equities, bonds and property. His most recent responsibilities included asset allocation and portfolio risk management. At Hymans, as well as work with clients, he is a member of the Technical Research Group, providing input into our views on capital markets and, in particular, alternative investments and investment banking products. Graeme plays golf and is a season ticket holder at St. Mirren Football Club. Both are more often a source of frustration rather than the enjoyment intended.
