Brian Bailey
Mr Bailey gained a degree in Chemical Engineering before qualifying as an accountant with Wolverhampton City Council where he was appointed Director of Finance in 1988. Since 1988, in addition to other responsibilities, he has been responsible for the £7.5 billion West Midlands Metropolitan Authorities Pension Fund (UK), a public sector workers pension scheme with membership in excess of 210,000. The Fund’s administration is carried out in-house, together with a significant element of investment management, combined with the use of a number of specialist external Fund Managers. From April 2008, he became Director of Pensions full time for the West Midlands Pension Fund and relinquished all his other responsibilities. A number of company non-executive directorships have been held and was for many years an audit committee member of two US private equity funds. A non-executive directorship of PIRC Limited is currently held, together with the honorary treasurer role for LAPFF (Local Authorities Pension Fund Forum).
Jaakko P. Karki
Jaakko is CEO/CIO and Founder of Blue White Alternative Investments Ltd. Jaakko has over 34 years of experience in the financial industry, most recently as the Chief Investment Officer and Member of Executive Board of Attica Alternative Investments Ltd. that he and other owners sold to Sal Oppenheim KAG in 2006. Previously, he was the CIO of Key Asset Management Group and Director of Hedge Fund Research and Selection at International Asset Management Ltd., all hedge fund of funds located in London. Having joined CSFB in 1988 in London, Jaakko worked over 12 years at various investment banks, including CSFB, CS, EBRD and ING Barings, being responsible for external multi-manager Mortgage Backed Securities and Fixed Income Arbitrage investment programmes, proprietary trading, bond and derivatives structuring and trading, market and model risk management, financial engineering and investment research. Previously, for over 12 years Jaakko was a Finance Professor and Economics Research Fellow, teaching Finance, Investments, Derivatives and Economics at a number of universities in the USA, UK and Finland, most recently at the London Business School (LBS) of the University of London, where he also received his PhD in Finance in 1984. Jaakko also has MPhil and MSc degrees in Economics, Statistics and Accountancy, and he holds the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst CAIAä designation and the UKSIP full IMC Certificate in Investment Management. Jaakko has been adviser and consultant to a large number of central banks, supra-nationals, insurance companies, pension funds and investment banks, and the Chairman of the Risk Advisory Board of a Dutch Investment Management and Insurance group.
Carl Robert
Ph.D., FRM, is a portfolio manager for Caisse de Dépôt du Placement du Québec, one of the leading institutional fund managers in Canada with over $155.4 billion of net assets. As a member of the tactical asset allocation team, with a specialization in commodities, Carl’s background as a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Maryland, and Post-doc at the University of California, allowed him to bring his knowledge of quantitative strategies to finance. Prior to his current position, Dr. Robert managed various CTAs (Commodity Trading Advisor) investment strategies at a Californian hedge fund.
Alain Kerneis
Alain is Executive Director in the Global Investment Strategies Group at Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GSAM). The Global Investment Strategies team consists of specialists in strategic asset allocation, risk budgeting and portfolio optimisation to provide customised solutions to institutional investors. Located in London, Alain works with GSAM's European institutional clients. Alain joined Goldman Sachs in 2000 as a global strategist in the firm's sell-side Research division and transferred to the Global Investment Strategies Group in 2005. In this role, Alain advised institutional investors on asset allocation and portfolio construction. He previously worked at Commerzbank Securities and Citibank Global Asset Management as a quantitative strategist. Alain has over 11 years of investment industry experience. He received a PhD in statistics applied to chemistry in 1994 from the Institut National Agronomique in Paris.
