Gary Chong

Gary is currently appointed as vice president at Credit Suisse Group, in the bank operational risk oversight (BORO) department. At Credit Suisse, Gary is primarily responsible for ensuring that the operational risk management (ORM) framework is firmly established and consistently applied across Credit Suisse’s businesses in the Asia Pacific region (covering investment banking division, private banking division, asset management division and shared services division in 15+ regions). In this role, he plays an active and important role as a business partner to front to bank office business management/ key stakeholders to identify & analyse business objectives, processes and risks, thereby ensuring mitigating strategies/controls are in place and risks are tracked & reported.

Prior to Credit Suisse, Gary was with the Overseas Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC Bank) where he held senior appointment as the group head of operational risk policy. At OCBC, Gary spear headed the development & implementation of the ORM framework, programs and methodologies across OCBC Group and has been instrumental in drawing up and execution of OCBC’s strategic risk management initiatives and programs to comply with the new capital framework for banks (Basel II). Besides active involvement at the bank level, Gary also represented OCBC in various industry-wide taskforce (under the purview of the Association of Banks in Singapore, ABS) in areas of risk management and previously business continuity management. More notably, Gary is the author of the ABS Financial Industry Crisis Co-ordination guidelines which was tested in the MAS – ABS industry wide exercise (a.k.a. Exercise Raffles) on 09 May 2006 in preparation for the IMF – World Bank Meeting, Singapore 2006.

Academically, Gary holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Banking & Finance and an executive MBA from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business (GSB). He is also cross trained in enterprise Risk management concepts covering market and credit risk management and has been trained/ attended training in a number of professional certification programs, including Professional Risk Manager (PRM) – Professional Risk Manager’s International Association (PRMIA)/ NUS Risk Management Institute, Business Continuity Management (BCM) – DRI Asia, General Insurance – Singapore college of Insurance and Bloomberg product certification program.
